The number of students who appear for the civil service exam in India varies each year. However, on average, around 9-10 lakh candidates apply for the exam every year. The actual number of candidates who appear for the exam may vary from year to year, as not all candidates who apply may actually appear for the exam. The competition for the civil service exam is quite tough, as there are only a limited number of vacancies available each year. Only the top-ranked candidates in the final merit list are selected for the various services under the civil services

The civil service exam is considered one of the most challenging exams, and the competition for a limited number of positions is high. Successful candidates can secure employment in government agencies and work in a variety of roles to serve the public.

The success percentage for the civil service exam in India is quite low, as the competition is very tough and the selection process is quite rigorous. On average, only about 0.1% to 0.3% of candidates who appear for the exam are able to clear it and make it to the final merit list.

To be eligible to take the civil service exam in India, a candidate must meet the following criteria:

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Nationality: The candidate must be a citizen of India, Nepal, or Bhutan. Tibetan refugees who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of settling in India permanently are also eligible.
  2. Age: The candidate must be between 21 and 32 years of age as of August 1 of the year of examination. There are age relaxations for candidates belonging to certain categories.
  3. Education: The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or institution.
  4. Number of attempts: General category candidates can attempt the exam up to six times, while there are relaxations for candidates belonging to certain categories.
  5. Physical fitness: The candidate must meet the physical fitness criteria specified by the government.
  6. Character: The candidate must have a good moral character and must not have been convicted of any criminal offense.
  7. Language: The candidate must have proficiency in English and any one of the regional languages.

Selection process:

The civil service Exam selection process in India consists of three stages:

Preliminary examination

Mains Examination

Personal Interview

Preliminary Exam: This is the first stage of the selection process. It is an objective-type exam consisting of two papers – General Studies and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The marks obtained in the Preliminary exam are not counted for final selection, but only those candidates who qualify for the Preliminary exam are eligible to appear for the Main exam.

Main Exam: The Main exam is a written exam consisting of nine papers. The papers include an essay paper, four General Studies papers, two optional papers, and two language papers. The Main exam is of 1750 marks.

Interview: Candidates who clear the Main exam are called for an interview, which is also known as the Personality Test. The interview is conducted by a board of competent and unbiased observers who have a keen interest in selecting the right candidate for the job. The interview is of 275 marks.

The final selection is based on the marks obtained in the Main exam and the interview. The Preliminary exam is only a screening test, and the marks obtained in this exam are not counted for final selection. The final merit list is prepared based on the total marks obtained in the Main exam and the interview.
